Outspoken footballer Joey Barton might be without a club - but he won't be signing up to play in the League of Ireland anytime soon, it seems.

The former QPR player said it was extremely unlikely he would ever play in Ireland's domestic league.

"Unless, of course, I lost all my money in a Bernie Madoff-style ponzi and had no other option," he wrote in an online questions and answers session.

The query was posted by Craig Colgan, the editor of dedicated Irish soccer website, who then quipped that the league was above Barton's standard.

"He needs to check himself before he slags off the league, considering his former Newcastle team-mate, Damien Duff, plays in the league and Barton hasn't even got a club," Craig told the Herald.
