Twigg bags classy double to sign off on high

Gary Twigg celebrated his last home match for Shamrock Rovers with a first-half brace, which gave the Hoops an unimpressive victory over UCD.

A dull opening to the game was forgotten when Rovers opened the scoring on 18 minutes thanks to a wonderful finish from Twigg, who raced beyond Hugh Douglas on to Billy Dennehy's pass and rounded Ger Barron before sliding the ball home from an acute angle.

The clinical Twigg struck again in the 20th minute, with Stephen Rice the provider on this occasion. With the hosts' concentration lost after Twigg had doubled their advantage, the visitors struck back in wonderful fashion two minutes later as David McMillan cushioned a Gary Burke pass before unleashing a dipping volley that left Oscar Jansson grasping at thin air.

With Twigg replaced by Gary O'Neill in the 75th minute, UCD continued to dominate.

McMillan was denied what would have been a deserved equaliser for the visitors in the 85th minute when his adventurous chipped attempt was scrambled to safety by the back-pedalling Jansson.
