Super-sub Russell stars for Students

Drogheda Utd 1

A wonder goal from substitute Sean Russell, son of manager Martin, ensured UCD nabbed their third win in eight days and put some distance between themselves and Drogheda.

Drogheda showed little going forward in the early stages, but on 31 minutes they got the breakthrough after a rare venture into the final third.

After Yael Haro had upended Mark Nolan on the edge of the box, David Freeman got the crucial touch as the UCD defence failed to deal with Stephen McCrossan's whipped-in free.

Seven minutes into the second half, Robbie Creevy pounced for the Students to nod past goalkeeper Trimble.

A share of the spoils looked the likely outcome as opportunities were at a premium.

That was until Paul Corry found Russell ghosting down the left and he connected with a screamer off his left peg that landed in Trimble's top corner.
