Stephen McPhail appointed as Sporting Director at Shamrock Rovers
Retired Ireland international Stephen McPhail has been announced as the new Sporting Director at his former club, Shamrock Rovers.
The midfielder called time on his career this year after joining Rovers in 2014 following a lengthy career in English football that saw him represent Leeds, Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday and Cardiff City.
In a statement released this afternoon announcing the appointment, Shamrock Rovers explained what McPhail's new position will entail.
"As our Sporting Director, Stephen will be heavily involved throughout every aspect in improving Shamrock Rovers," the statement says.
"In the short term he will work very closely with the Board to appoint the best person to lead the first team forward.
"The task of recruiting new players for next season is already well underway and Stephen will be central to this process.
"Growing our brand, developing protocols that cover fresh recruitment strategies, junior and senior, and instilling a discipline that demands the highest standards of performance and behaviour from each and every employee that represent Shamrock Rovers will also fall under Stephen's remit.
"The continued development of our training base in Roadstone is also of extreme importance and alongside Shane Robinson and Stephen Bradley, Stephen McPhail will provide considerable influence on how that development takes shape.
"Most importantly the position of Sporting Director will provide a link between the Academy and senior management team and this structure will be imperative to the continued success of our strategy as we look to develop the football club from top to bottom."
