Eleven places separate St Patrick's Athletic and Shelbourne across two divisions, but the second-tier side left Richmond Park last night with a hard-earned replay that in truth Pat's could do without.

Missing gilt-edged chances wasn't something that you associated with Liam Buckley's side last season but in recent games they have been repeatedly guilty of just that.

It took the home side just three minutes to open the scoring and it came about rather fortuitously.

Chris Forrester's cross looked harmless but a slip from Adam O'Connor allowed the ball to reach Christy Fagan and the striker composed himself before coolly finishing into the far corner.

Shels responded seven minutes later, however. Jordan Keegan played the ball into Alan O'Sullivan's feet and he turned and cracked a shot past Brendan Clarke at the near post.

Forrester and Conan Byrne both went close to regaining the lead for Pat's before the break but they never really troubled Greg Murray in the visitors' goal.

Conor Murphy came within a whisker of putting Shels back in front but Clarke made a crucial touch to divert the ball inches wide of the post.

The home side assumed the ascendancy but they rarely troubled Murray in the second half despite getting into some great goalscoring positions.

Byrne twice failed to work the keeper while Sean Hoare flashed a header wide when he was left unmarked in the six-yard box.

Try as they might Pat's couldn't find a winner and the sides will meet again on Tuesday.
