Shamrock Rovers defender Roberto Lopes is about to join the international ranks as the Dublin native has been called up to the senior squad by Cape Verde islands.

The 27-year-old, who began his career with Belvedere and made the breakthrough at senior level with Bohemians before a 2016 move to Rovers, had been linked with Cape Verde for some time as he qualifies through his father.

"We tried to fish something out a while back but nothing really came of it. I had to send over some documents but I kind of let that ship sail," he said in 2017.

But contact was renewed lately and Cape Verde have called up Lopes for friendly games, to be played in France, against Togo and DR Congo in two weeks' time.

Rovers will also have Jack Byrne on senior international duty with the Republic of Ireland.
