Ryan Connolly and Vinny Faherty the chief tormentors as Galway United beat Wexford
Galway United 4 Wexford Youths 2
Ryan Connolly starred for Galway United and Vinny Faherty scored twice as they saw off Wexford Youths in Eamonn Deacy Park.
Tommy Dunne’s side had won a game in Galway since April 8 but two goals from Faherty and one each for Connolly and Gary Shanahan sealed the win.
It was 2-1 to Galway at half-time but they were completely dominant in the first-half and should have held a bigger lead at the break.
They fell behind to a shock Shane Dunne goal in the 21st minute, when Galway failed to clear a Craig McCabe throw-in and the ball was hammered into the bottom right corner of Conor Winn’s net.
Ryan Connolly went close as Galway chased an equaliser and just two minutes after they fell behind Shanahan scored Galway’s first goal. Faherty crossed brilliantly from the left and Shanahan toe-poked the ball home.
Conor Melody almost gave Galway the lead straight away, and then Stephen Last got in the way as Melody tried his luck again.
But Melody provided the assist for Faherty in the 38th minute to put Galway into a lead they never surrendered.
He crossed from the left and Faherty nodded home the lead goal as Galway took a 2-1 lead into half-time.
Connolly scored a brilliant third goal on the hour, and then Paul Murphy was sent off for Wexford.
But despite a consolation from Andy Mulligan, Faherty sealed the win with his second of the game in the 92nd minute of an entertaining contest.
