Central defenders are in demand as League of Ireland title-chasers Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers look to strengthen in the summer transfer window.

Dundalk are strong in that department, but will look to sign former Oriel favourite Andy Boyle if he opts to return home following his release from Preston.

It's believed the champions are confident he would pick Dundalk over Rovers.

However, the Hoops will make a strong push for another Dundalk target - UCD defender Liam Scales - although the Irish U-21 defender has ambitions of moving to England and recently spent a week at Man City with in-demand team-mate Neil Farrugia.

Rovers boss Stephen Bradley may also face a fight to hold on to star centre-half Lee Grace (26) for the rest of the season with the late-blooming ex-Wexford and Galway player on UK lists.

Another push for St Patrick's Athletic defender Lee Desmond could be on the cards if Grace goes.

Rovers will sign UCD midfielder Gary O'Neill with the students set to suffer in this window.

Derry City are likely to secure the services of striker Conor Davis.

With Rovers out of action, Dundalk can move three clear if they beat Sligo Rovers tonight.

The visitors will be without Dante Leverock after his head-injury scare at Dalymount Park last Friday, but the Bermuda player told the new LOI Weekly Podcast that he is on course to captain his country in the Gold Cup which starts on June 16.
