Roche sinks Rovers as Peamount claim double
Shamrock Rovers 0 Peamount United 1
PEAMOUNT UNITED completed the double at Tallaght Stadium yesterday as Stephanie Roche's strike earned them victory in the Bus Eireann Women's National League Cup final.
The Irish international winger supplied the only goal of a tense contest on 33 minutes when her first-time, left-foot shot from 20 yards rose high into the top corner of Sara Devlin's net.
Recently-crowned National League champions Peamount created enough chances to be out of sight by the hour mark, but the Hoops were allowed to stay in the game.
Rachel Jenkins almost equalised in stoppage-time when her her close-range effort was saved by Linda Meehan.
Peamount took time to spark, but they settled down once Roche finished a three-player move.
Roche would have had her second within a minute but for a superb one-handed save by Devlin, and Caroline Thorpe clipped the crossbar with a lofted shot five minutes before the break.
More chances followed for Peamount after the break and player-of-the-match Dora Gorman was inches from extending the lead as her thunderbolt grazed the crossbar.
Rovers maintained hope and, after Noelle Murray went close with a free-kick which was saved, Jenkins had their last-gasp chance that was spurned.
