Mixed emotions for Grimes over ban
DROGHEDA UNITED defender Shane Grimes has been suspended until January after testing positive for a banned substance he consumed in an energy drink.
The Dundalk native was unaware that the supplement, Jack3d, contained methylhexaneamine, and the disciplinary panel of the Irish Sports Council accepted that the footballer was guilty of carelessness rather than trying to enhance his performance.
If they had taken the latter view, he could have faced a two-year ban. Instead, he received an eight-month punishment, backdated to May 11 -- he failed a test after a league meeting with Bohemians that night.
Grimes admitted to mixed emotions after the news emerged, saying: "In the first instance, I am extremely disappointed that my season has ended early and that I won't be able to help my team-mates for the remainder of the year.
"However, this is balanced with feelings of relief and gratitude that the Sports Council panel accept that I did not knowingly take a performance-enhancing drug."
