McMillan gives Bohs timely boost

TEN-MAN Bohemians recovered from their Icelandic nightmare to secure a nervy win over UCD at Dalymount Park.

The hosts enjoyed a bright opening and Karl Moore should have done better in the seventh minute after cutting inside David O'Connor.

Apart from a 17th-minute snapshot from Robert Benson that flew harmlessly wide, UCD made very few forays into enemy territory despite some skilful play by Paul Corry, and it was Bohs who broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute.

After Mark McGinley had done well to parry Andy Mulligan's snapshot out for a corner, Evan McMillan was afforded far too much space as he powered home a header from Ryan McEvoy's delivery.

Mulligan then made a scorching run that left Hugh Douglas for dead three minutes before half-time, but McGinley once again worked wonders in tipping the Bohs player's rising drive over the crossbar.

Benson was guilty of another less-than-composed finish within three minutes of the resumption.

Understandably, given their midweek travails, the hosts lacked the vibrancy of their opening-half showing, but they almost doubled their lead in the 58th minute when Dwayne Wilson's audacious lob was intercepted by a back-pedalling McGinley under his crossbar.

Encouragingly for the visitors, Corry was having more and more of an influence in midfield, but UCD lacked the cutting edge to make the most of the former Belvedere player's promptings.

At the other end, Moore and substitute Keith Ward had chances to make the game safe for for Bohs before David Scully was sent off in the 75th minute after an off-the-ball altercation with David O'Connor.

UCD did their best to make the most of the extra man, but their hopes of an equaliser were finally extinguished when Craig Sexton made an injury-time save to deny Corry.
