McLaughlin sinks students
UCD's poor run continued last night as, despite enjoying good spells, they were stung when visitors Derry City landed the blow that mattered courtesy of Stephen McLaughlin.
It has been a strange sort of campaign for the Candystripes, with injuries disrupting their progress, but an away win at the campus venue is an encouraging result.
Despite the woeful conditions, UCD attempted to pass the ball, with Paul Corry again prominent. Still, for all of UCD's probing, it was Derry who nicked the lead in the 33rd minute when the Students were ruthlessly punished for a lapse in concentration.
A clever piece of Owen Morrison skill set up McLaughlin to drill the Candystripes ahead.
On the stroke of half-time McLaughlin came close to adding a second, but his header crept inches wide.
After the restart, UCD were camped deep in Derry territory, but Robbie Benson spurned a string of chances.
Six minutes from the end Derry were reduced to 10 men when Simon Madden was red-carded for a second bookable offence. Derry remained solid at the back until stoppage-time when goalkeeper Ger Doherty had to be alert to thwart a stinging Chris Lyons drive.
