HOTSHOT Patrick McEleney scored a stunning free-kick to give Derry victory in Athlone and send a memo to Championship and SPL clubs searching for raw talent.

The club that has become brand leaders in exporting uncut gems to be polished in higher leagues has another star on its books.

McEleney, responding to the challenge his manager has asked of him, is producing levels of excellence on a consistent basis these days and it seems only a matter of time before it gets noticed.

Derry manager Peter Hutton, purred: "Patrick's free-kick was sensational and the lads were calling him David Luiz afterwards. No goalkeeper in the world could have saved it."

While Mceleney's 20th strike of the campaign was worthy of winning any match, Athlone were unlucky to lose.

Phil Gorman was denied by the woodwork in the first half and Ger Doherty had to be at his best to deny Sean Brennan and Ian Sweeney in the second period. Stephen Quigley also came close for Town who stay bottom, six points off safety.

Athlone Town – Skinner; Quigley, A Byrne, Prendergast, S Byrne; Hughes, Dillon, Rusk (Mulroy 81); Brennan (Sweeney 81), Gorman, O'Brien.

Derry City – Doherty; Ventre, McBride (Jarvis 46), S McEleney, Barry; Molloy, McNamee, P McEleney (Boyle 75); Lowry (Curran 86), Patterson, Duffy.

Ref – G Kelly (Cork).
