Goals early in the second half from Patrick McEleney, Michael Duffy and Philip Lowry eased Derry into the quarter-finals.

Brian Kane came to Malahide's rescue on 30 minutes when he did superbly well to keep out Duffy's close-range header. Right on the stroke of half-time, Barry McNamee should have broken the deadlock for City but with only Kane to beat, he fired wide from 12 yards.

Derry finally opened the scoring on 53 minutes thanks to another goal of the season contender from McEleney, this time his 30-yard strike gave Kane no chance.

The home side added a second a minute later when Dooley's pass found Duffy inside the right-hand side of the box, and the midfielder drilled the ball home past Kane.

Lowry finally scored his first goal for Derry, drilling home from close range, after the Dubliners started to feel the pace.
