So impressive when capturing the First Division title last season, Cork City brought equal measures of hope and expectation to the UCD Bowl, but the 300-strong travelling supporters went back to Leeside fully aware that significant improvement is required.
The most frustrating aspect of this defeat was that UCD didn't even have to be particularly classy to secure the spoils -- the Students were simply well organised by Martin Russell, who continues to get efficient and effective displays from his young crop of players. At the end of 2011 UCD claimed five wins in their last six league matches at the UCD Bowl, and Russell is clearly intent on earning points at the campus venue again in this campaign.
As the first half evolved UCD improved and went ahead in the 36th minute courtesy of a smashing Mark Langtry goal.
Chris Lyons, UCD's pacy lone front-runner, crafted the opportunity for Langtry, who guided the Students ahead with a close-range finish.
