JOSHUA Smith ended a barren run to give Finn Harps their first win in eight on a night when their place in the play-off was secured.

Smith’s early goal was Harps’ first in 278 minutes and saw them overcome Waterford.

Harps took a sixth-minute lead when American defender Smith rose to head home his first goal for the club.

Nathan Boyle surprised even himself when he beat a first-minute offside trap, but Waterford goalkeeper Matt Connor made the important save.

Boyle almost doubled Harps’ lead on 68 minutes, but Connor did well under pressure to hold on to the striker’s header after he met a teasing clip into the area by Raffaele Cretaro.

Just two minutes later, Mark Anthony McGinley brilliantly parried away a drive from sub Dean Walsh, who then headed over from close range.

Harps held on and a meeting with Cabinteely or Drogheda awaits.
