Johnstone relishing LoI task
SALTHILL DEVON are set to swell the Galway participation in the League of Ireland to three teams after voting to enter the First Division on Monday night.
Kildare County's collapse meant Salthill -- the highest-finishing non-league team in the 'A' Championship -- didn't even have to play a promotion/relegation play-off to ascend to League Of Ireland level. City rivals Mervue United graduated to the First Division that way 12 months ago.
While there is a feeling in the league that just one team from the city, Premier Division side Galway United, is adequate representation, the members of Salthill voted overwhelmingly to take their chances.
"As a club, we've always had the ambition to play at the highest level possible," said Salthill Devon chairman Tony Johnstone. "I have every confidence that we will acquit ourselves with distinction and we look forward to the challenge."
