Hat-trick for Amond as Sligo take out frustration on Drogheda

Amond: hat-trick

Sligo Rovers striker Padraig Amond claims that his free-scoring side have been venting their frustrations in the past two games.

Amond scored a hat-trick against Drogheda United at The Showgrounds on Saturday, taking his personal tally for his new club to double figures.

He also scored twice in the midweek defeat of Letterkenny Rovers and, amazingly, Saturday's victory was Sligo's second successive 6-0 triumph.

Prior to that they scored just two goals in their previous five games, and failed to win in the last seven. But Amond said that that the winless run had angered the players.

"We have dominated games recently but we haven't got the goals. We've been playing very well for the last number of weeks but haven't got the rub of the green.

"I think that we have got rid of a bit of frustration over the past couple of games and hopefully those two results will kickstart our season and help push us up to where we should be in the league."

Amond completed his first senior hat-trick in the second half of Saturday's game, but it was the first half sending-off of Drogheda defender Brian King that proved crucial and helped turn the game in the home side's favour.

King was shown red for a last-man-tackle on Eoin Doyle, and Rovers needed just a minute to take advantage before Richie Ryan fired home to opening goal on the stroke of half-time.

Gavin Peers made it 2-0 with a diving header two minutes after the restart, and, aside from scoring three as the floodgates opened, Amond was also responsible for setting-up substitute John Dillon for Rovers' fifth goal just a minute after his introduction.

Sligo boss Paul Cook said his side need to build on the win.

"I'm delighted with the lads but it's still just three points and we want to start getting some more on the board quickly," he said.
