A strong European showing by the League of Ireland's representatives this week is crucial not just for the clubs themselves, but for the general morale of domestic soccer. The league has slipped to 42nd place in Europe and these matches provide a golden opportunity to move up the rankings.

Slovenia's league, for example, is ranked 32nd but Dundalk's wealth of experience surely makes them favourites in their Champions League match against that country's champions NK Celje who haven't been in Europe since 2015 or won a match there since 2003.
