Gillespie joins Longford Town

Longford Town last night completed one of the more bizarre transfers of recent years when they signed Northern Ireland international Keith Gillespie.

The 36-year-old, who came through the Manchester United youth system alongside David Beckham, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes before moving to Newcastle United as a makeweight in the then record £7m transfer of Andy Cole, could make his debut against Athlone Town next week.

Gillespie, who has been without a club since leaving Darlington in December, was declared bankrupt by the Belfast High Court last year.
