The rebuilding process is underway at Richmond Park with the capture of talented defender Simon Madden from Shamrock Rovers.

It was a year to forget for St Patrick's Athletic who came perilously close to relegation.

It was mid-season investment from the owner Garrett Kelleher that allowed manager Liam Buckley to bring in senior players that steered them clear of danger.

Saints fan will be pleased to see their side recruit a player of Madden's calibre.

The 29-year-old has also had spells with Leeds United, Darlington, Derry City and Dundalk.

He was voted Shamrock Rovers' player of the year by Hoops supporters in 2016.

Waterford had been previously linked with a move for Madden when he severed ties with Rovers at the end of the season.

Pats have already signed Ryan Brennan from Bray and re-signed captain Ian Bermingham, Conan Byrne and Graham Kelly.
