Athlone Town's season has gone from bad to worse this evening after they were forced to pull out of their Airtricity League Division One clash with Waterford United as they were unable to field a team.

Athlone are currently seventh in the table, just one place below Waterford, who will miss out on the gate receipts from tonight's encounter.

The FAI issued a strongly worded statement lambasting Athlone for pulling out of the fixture so close to kick off.

"We take this matter extremely seriously and will be charging Athlone for failing to fulfil the fixture and for bringing the game into disrepute," said SSE Airtricity League director Fran Gavin.

"This is totally unacceptable. To be notified on the afternoon of an SSE Airtricity League fixture that a club cannot field a team is simply not good enough. We will be meeting with Athlone Town over the weekend to discuss this serious matter."
