Teenager James Doona bagged a brace as Shamrock Rovers brushed aside Finn Harps at Tallaght Stadium last night to climb four points clear of Derry in the race for third spot.

After Gary Shaw had given the Hoops a deserved interval lead, Brandon Miele added a second before substitute Doona scored a five-minute double.

BJ Banda pulled one back for struggling Harps with two minutes left, but that provided little consolation.

Rovers meant business from the off, with Ronan Finn unleashing a shot after just 40 seconds that whistled wide of the near post.

The pressure continued as the unmarked Shaw climbed highest to connect with Finn's fourth-minute cross which Ciaran Gallagher did well to paw away.

Shaw had better luck on 27 minutes, prodding the ball home from close range after Cameron King had ghosted into the penalty area and squared across the six-yard box.

Rovers didn't have to wait long after the interval for the second to arrive. Miele stepped up on 51 minutes to find the top corner with a textbook free-kick.

Doona then made his mark shortly after replacing Clarke on the hour. Eight minutes later, he jinked inside his marker before drilling a low shot home from 10 yards and then he connected with Ryan Connolly's right-wing cross to beat Gallagher with another cutting drive.
