Dillon the hero for Sligo
Galway United 0 Sligo Rovers 1
Galway battled hard but ultimately lacked the conviction and class to overcome Sligo at Terryland Park last night.
Early on, Galway were as gutsy and committed as a derby tussle demands, but Paul Cook's men were able to retain the ball with greater ease and the only goal of the evening was pinched on the half-hour mark.
John Russell dashed out to the left and crossed for John Dillon, who squeezed a shot past Greg Fleming to give Sligo a deserved lead.
Sligo continued to pass and probe after the break, but the visitors spurned a string of gilt-edged opportunities. Russell and Alan Kirby were denied by Fleming, while the post thwarted Dillon during a third quarter in which Sligo were camped deep in Galway territory.
The impressive Russell continued to pull the strings as Sligo ran out more comfortable winners than the scoreline suggested.
