Devaney sinks Sligo
Galway United 3 Sligo Rovers 1
Galway United are within touching distance of preserving their Premier Division status for another season after this win over Sligo Rovers at Eamonn Deacy Park.
Sligo native and former Sligo Rovers player Kevin Devaney scored a stunning goal late on and Gavin Holohan added a third as they claimed all three points.
Galway had a massively important 2-1 at home to Derry City last weekend and despite falling behind early to a Kyle Callan-McFadden goal, Marc Ludden equalised for 1-1 half-time scoreline.
The hosts should have taken the lead early but failed with a number of chances when Devaney and Pádraic Cunningham were both guilty of missed opportunities. Ronan Murray came closest but he rattled the crossbar from a free-kick and in the 15th minute Sligo scored.
Regan Donelon sent in a cross from a free-kick on the right, Greg Moorhouse headed it down and centre-half Callan-McFadden powered his shot in off the crossbar.
Galway looked short on confidence and they almost went 2-0 down but Jamie McDonagh's 22nd-minute drive came back off the crossbar. But Galway equalised minute before half-time thanks to fantastic build-up play from Holohan, who cut inside the Sligo cover before passing to Marc Ludden and he finished to the net.
Galway stepped it up after the break and Devaney scored in the 72nd minute before Holohan sealed a crucial win with the third goal three minutes later.
