Derry delight as Peers shows class
Sligo Rovers 0 Derry City 2
Kenny Shiels heaped praise on Gavin Peers after the veteran defender made his long-awaited Derry debut at the Showgrounds, where Sligo slumped to their fourth successive home defeat.
Peers came in for the injured Darren Cole at a ground where he spent 10 hugely successful years. And he looked right at home as he helped inspire his new club to just their third clean sheet of the season.
Shiels said: "I am delighted for Gavin. You can see the spirit that he has and the organisational skills - all those sort of qualities."
Rory Patterson netted the opener from a deflected free-kick on 16 minutes, and Ronan Hale wrapped things up on a swift counter-attack on 75 minutes.
Sligo manager Gerard Lyttle said: "We were flat from start to finish. Derry wanted it more, which is hurting."
