Kenny Shiels has "parted ways" with Derry City following a disappointing season that saw the Candystripes finish eighth in the league.

Shiels did guide Derry to their first trophy in six years when they won the League Cup in September but their league form has been poor, losing eight of their final nine matches with Friday night's 5-0 defeat to St Pat's the final straw.

Derry chairman Philip O'Doherty said: "Derry City and Kenny Shiels have decided to part company as of today.

"We acknowledge Kenny's contribution to the football club over the past three seasons, one of which was particularly difficult.

"We wish Kenny the best for the future.

"The club will make no further comment."
