DERRY CITY secured third spot and in doing so ended Sligo Rovers’ slim hopes of claiming a European spot.

Kenny Shiels’ side came from behind to win the points and but for some tremendous goalkeeping from Ciaran Nugent they would have won by more.

The woodwork came to Derry’s rescue early on as Philip Roberts’ chip from the edge of the box hit the bar, with Ger Doherty beaten, before Nugent foiled Aaron McEneff and then Ronan Curtis.

Sligo broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time as Pat McCann’s strike sailed over a ruck of players and into the net, after Doherty had initially punched Craig Roddan’s centre.

Nugent made a stunning point-blank save to deny Conor McCormack, but Derry drew level when McEneff fired home from 25 yards.

Nugent produced another stunning save to finger-tip Rory Patterson’s effort over the bar.

Derry took the lead on 76 minutes as Barry McNamee skipped inside several challenges before stroking the ball home with his weaker right foot from close range.

Derry City – G Doherty, McDermott (Whiteside 80), Castells, Jarvis; Daniels, McCormack, McEneff, McNamee (B Doherty 80), Schubert (Boyle 70); Curtis, Patterson.

Sligo Rovers – Nugent, Boylan, Leahy, Peers, Donelon (Doyle 84); McCann, Roddan, Sadlier, Kearns, Russell (Place 77); Roberts.

Ref – R Matthews (Longford).
