Goals from Kevin Deery and Eamon Zayed took Derry City to within a point of leaders Shamrock Rovers.

The hosts were fairly lacklustre, but 'keeper Gerard Doherty didn't have a single meaningful shot to save.

City came close early on following a slick passing move, which saw Gareth McGlynn feed Patrick McEleney, but his close-range shot was bravely blocked by Alan McNally.

Derry did open the scoring on 24 minutes when Zayed's cross found Deery, who headed home at the back post.

Drogheda should have levelled 10 minutes later, but Darragh McNamara's low centre just flashed past an unmarked Darragh Hanaphy.

Derry suffered an injury setback when Deery, like midfield partner Ruaidhri Higgins, had to be replaced.

Zayed thought he had increased the lead on 68 minutes, but he was just offside when he turned home Ruairi Harkin's delivery.

But right at the death Zayed made no mistake, calmly side-footing home, following a quick counter-attack.
