Cork City moved back into the top two as Graham Cummins got the only goal of a lacklustre game at Turners Cross last night.

It wasn’t a vintage performance from the champions, but after last week’s loss to Waterford the important thing was to not drop any more points and they achieved that objective.

Cummins’ goal came four minutes into the second-half as he was found by a good Conor McCormack ball from deep and looped a header over Barry Murphy.

Up until then, though, the game had been fairly even and Pat’s were the livelier side in the opening stages of the first-half. While they enjoyed good territory, they couldn’t sufficiently trouble Mark McNulty in the home goal.

Having been on the back foot, City almost took the lead on 15 minutes as a Cummins header from a Barry McNamee corner came off the post and Kieran Sadlier went close as Cummins headed another corner to him.

Those chances weren’t the signal for City to push on, though, and the visitors more than held their own for the rest of the half, which ended with Jamie Lennon having a shot deflected over the City crossbar.

City did move in front when Cummins netted and they went close to making it two immediately after that, with Lee Desmond doing well to block Sadlier.

Pat’s continued to press, as Jake Keegan had a shot from distance, which McNulty dealt with, and then their best chance came when Ryan Brennan met an Owen Garvan free-kick at the back post but couldn’t divert the ball in.

City could have wrapped up the win late on when subs Josh O’Hanlon and Jimmy Keohane linked, but Murphy saved from the latter.

They were left hanging on as Pat’s pushed hard for a late equaliser, but it remained elusive.
