Class permanent for Bray's Byrne

Bray Wanderers 3 St Patrick's Athletic 3

St Patrick's Athletic departed the Carlisle Grounds reflecting on what might have been following a dramatic contest by the sea.

Reading manager Brian McDermott came to monitor St Patrick's Athletic's talented teenager Chris Forrester, but the abiding memory from this encounter was the enduring goalscoring class of Jason Byrne.

Pat's were rocked in the 36th minute when Bray took the lead against the run of play. Kieran Marty Waters' cross elicited panic in the area and Byrne converted with trademark accuracy.

Despite falling behind, Pat's passed and probed and an equaliser arrived in the 44th minute when Christy Fagan converted Ger O'Brien's cross.

The visitors were caught out at the back again in the 59th minute when Sean Houston's header allowed John Mulroy to seize the initiative for Bray.

John Russell altered the complexion of the game, making Fagan's 67th-minute leveller before unleashing a 72nd-minute thunderbolt that had the Saints celebrating gleefully.

But Bray poured forward in the closing stages and they rescued a draw in stoppage-time when Byrne netted following another Waters cross.
