Carr nears shock Apollon move
Shamrock Rovers striker Dan Carr is in line for a move to their European conquerors Apollon Limassol, writes Daniel McDonnell.
The Cypriot side have made for a move for the 25-year-old Englishman after being impressed by his contribution across the two legs of their Europa League clash. Rovers pushed Apollon all the way to extra-time in their second round qualifier before going out by an aggregate scoreline of 4-3.
Carr started the first game in Tallaght before being introduced off the bench in Cyprus. Ironically enough, he was blamed by some Rovers fans for his part in their exit because of a stray pass in the lead up to the dismissal for defender Lee Grace that ultimately proved crucial.
However, Apollon saw enough to make enquiries about Carr who is in his second year with Rovers after arriving from a spell in Sweden.
They would also have watched the player contribute to their win over Norway's SK Brann in the previous round.
His deal with the Hoops is up at the end of the year, so a small fee would have to be thrashed out to facilitate the move. However, Carr is still scheduled to travel to Rovers' Premier Division game with Derry tomorrow.
Carr was on the books of Reading, Huddersfield and other clubs in the English league and non-league ladder. Apollon qualified for the Europa League group stages last term and are in the mix to figure again this year.
