Athlone Town have been handed a €1,000 fine by the FAI disciplinary committee for failing to fulfil a fixture against Waterford United at the RSC last Friday.

Athlone were unable to field a team for the away game because of a dispute between players and the club over payment issues.

Manager Alan Mathews has confirmed that a large number of his squad opted against turning up when they learned that their expenses were not going to be paid on time again.

Athlone been handed a €1,000 fine with an additional €4,000 suspended, which will only be payable if they fail to fulfil another competitive fixture this month.

Waterford have been awarded a 3-0 result for the match, with Athlone Town forfeiting the fixture.

The next fixture between the two sides on Friday, August 5th was set to be played at Athlone, but will now be played at Waterford's Regional Sports Centre and Waterford will retain all gate receipts from this fixture.

Earlier this week, the FAI ordered an independent review of Athlone Town in which an independent person will meet with all of the relevant stakeholders of Athlone Town to discuss and support the long-term future of the club, and this is an ongoing process.
