Bayern Munich have announced the arrival of Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez on a two-year loan deal, ending speculation that he was in line to make a move to Manchester United.

Reports had claimed that United were 'in talks' to sign Rodriguez, yet Old Trafford insiders have insisted Colombian star Rodriguez was not on their list of possible summer signings, even though the player appeared to be keen to make the move to Manchester.

While United were offered the chance to sign Rodriguez earlier this summer and the player’s agent Jorge Mendes was promoting a move to Manchester, he has instead found a route out of Real Madrid via Munich.

A statement from Bayern read: “FC Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have agreed on the change of Colombian national player James Rodriguez to the German championship on Tuesday.

“The two clubs agreed on a two-year loan transaction until June 30, 2019 with the following purchase option for FC Bayern Munich.

“James Rodriguez will sign his contract in Munich after successfully completing the compulsory medical check.”

Real Madrid have been trying to off-load Rodriguez all summer, with his omission from their entire squad for the Champions League final against Juventus last month evidence that his time at the club as coming to an end, three years after his €80m move from Monaco.

The move for Rodriguez is expected to intensify speculation that Monaco teenager Kylian Mbappe is closing in on a move to Real Madrid, with the Bernabeu giants looking to free up space on their wage bill to sign the rising star of world football this summer.
