England lined up without their dropped captain Wayne Rooney and the injured left-back Ryan Bertrand for their World Cup qualifier in Slovenia.

They were the only two changes from the XI that defeated Malta 2-0 on Saturday, with Eric Dier replacing 117-cap Rooney and Danny Rose in for Bertrand.

That meant another chance for Jesse Lingard, preferred again to Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford, and a 50th cap for centre-half Gary Cahill.

England: Hart, Walker, Stones, Cahill, Rose, Dier, Henderson, Walcott, Alli, Lingard, Sturridge.

Substitutes: Forster, Pickford, Gibbs, Antonio, Smalling, Keane, Vardy, Rashford, Townsend, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rooney.
