It took just 106 seconds for Daryl Murphy to score his second ever goal for the Republic of Ireland and he added to that tally 18 minutes later.

The Nottingham Forest striker showed all of his guile to latch onto Stephen Ward's flicked on header to give Martin O'Neill's side the lead.

The Waterford native doubled his account in the 19th minute when he expertly headed Ward's pinpoint cross beyond the despairing dive of Ilie Cebanu in the Moldovan goal.

Shane Long missed two gilt-edged chances to increase Ireland's lead and Moldova almost scored against the run of play when Sergiu Platica's long range volley was acrobatically tipped over by Darren Randolph.
