England may have secured qualification for the World Cup finals with a 1-0 win against Slovenia at Wembley on Thursday night, but the home supporters were less than impressed by the performance of Gareth Southgate’s team and made their feelings known with a novel form of protest.

Making paper aeroplanes and throwing them on to the pitch to highlight their boredom in a game that was decided by Harry Kane’s injury time winner, the England fans struggled to celebrate what should have been a great home of qualification joy.

With huge sections of Wembley empty for a qualifier that failed to capture the imagination of England followers despite cut-price tickets, Southgate and his players appear to have a big job on their hands to get their supporters back on side ahead of Russia 2018 next summer.

The highlight of the night for many fans at Wembley was the sight of one of the paper aeroplanes making its way towards the goal being guarded by Joe Hart, with the final landing spot producing one of the biggest cheers of the night.
