Shay Given retires from international football
Having won 134 caps over the course of 20 years, legendary Irish goalkeeper Shay Given has announced his retirement from international football.
The Donegal man, 40, took to Twitter this afternoon to reveal his decision, and thanked the Irish people, his teammates and fans for all their support over the two decades he spent in an Ireland jersey.
Given represented Ireland at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, the 2012 European Championships in Poland and Ukraine and, most recently, travelled as a squad member to Euro 2016 in France, though he did not feature.
Given previously retired from the international game in 2012, but returned to the fray at the request of Martin O'Neill, and played a pivotal role in Ireland's qualification for France.
