Daryl Murphy is a major doubt for Ireland's Euro 2016 qualifiers with Gibraltar and Georgia after Mick McCarthy indicated that the striker will not return to action for Ipswich before the international window.

McCarthy made that comment ahead of Ipswich's League Cup tie with Doncaster tonight, adding that last season's top marksman in the Championship is likely to miss out this weekend's encounter with Brighton.

The 32-year-old sustained a calf injury last week and will be hoping that it clears up ahead of Irish duty next week.

Murphy was selected by Martin O'Neill for the June draw with Scotland, and the forthcoming double header presents him with an opportunity to build on that vote of confidence. He is still waiting for a first Irish goal.

Meanwhile, McCarthy will throw in ex-Shelbourne youngster Adam McDonnell for his first Ipswich start tonight. He joined the club last year after gaining experience at League of Ireland top-flight level.
