Martin O'Neill was dealt a blow ahead of tomorrow's qualifier with Scotland with the news that both James McCarthy and Glenn Whelan have been ruled out of the fixture.
Both players were absent from training at Malahide this morning and the FAI has confirmed they will be returning to their respective clubs.
O'Neill stated yesterday that both would need to take part in training to stand any chance to feature against the Scots and their injuries means Darron Gibson, Stephen Quinn and Jeff Hendrick are favourites to start against the Scots in Celtic Park.
McCarthy — who also missed the games against Gibraltar and Germany through injury — did not train all week.
Steven Naismith has suspended his friendship with Aiden McGeady and James McCarthy until the dust settles on Scotland's Euro 2016 match with the Republic of Ireland tomorrow - but the Scottish striker defended his Everton colleagues' decision to choose Irish jerseys over the dark blue shirts they were also entitled to wear.
