Martin O'Neill is considering Irish call-ups for Preston attacker Callum Robinson and Sydney FC midfielder Brandon O'Neill. Robinson (23) has thrown his lot in with Ireland after representing England up to U-20 level.

Meanwhile, Australian-born O'Neill (24) has an Irish passport through his Irish-born father although his agent has gone on record to say that he would still welcome a call from his native country, who he has lined out for U-23 level.

The Ireland manager confirmed yesterday that he had watched DVDs of the player after being tipped off about his situation. O'Neill went to watch Robinson play for Preston at Sheffield United on Saturday.

"He has declared for us," he said. "I went to see the game and he's a nice little footballer, he was at Aston Villa.

"Lots of these players have work to do, lads. A number of the players we have mentioned (in a general chat) are not the finished article.

"At least he, without coaxing wants to come and play. So you know, I always think that's a half-decent step if the player wants to come in."

With regard to his namesake O'Neill, the Derryman said: "I did some research when I heard about him. A Scottish man I know quite well mentioned him to me quite some time ago. I'll have a look."
