Jeff Hendrick and James McCarthy miss out as Martin O'Neill trims Ireland squad for World Cup qualifiers

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill has trimmed his squad to 25 players for the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with Georgia and Serbia.

Midfielders Jeff Hendrick and James McCarthy have both been ruled out of the Irish squad with respective thigh and knee injuries, while Eunan O'Kane briefly reported for camp before returning to his club Leeds United to receive further treatment an ongoing groin complaint.

Hendrick played no part in Burnley's 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Sunday while McCarthy was withheld from Everton's 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile Keiren Westwood (knee), David Meyler (knee) and Jonathan Walters (ankle) have all overcome injury concerns to be included in O'Neill's revised squad.

The trio did not take a full part in training on Monday but are scheduled to return to training on Tuesday, with Aiden McGeady and David McGoldrick set to join them after being afforded an extra day due to personal reasons.

Colin Doyle, Alex Pearce, Paul McShane, John Egan, Greg Cunningham, Matt Doherty, Stephen Quinn, Liam Kelly, Alan Browne, Kevin Doyle and Sean Maguire were the other players culled from O'Neill's preliminary 39-man squad.
