Germany will be second seeds in the qualifying draw for Euro 2020 after Poland secured a positive result in Portugal last night.

Joachim Loew's side needed a Portuguese win in order to avoid dropping into the second tier the draw, ehich will be held in Dublin on Sunday week.

Poland came from behind to get the 1-1 draw they required to ensure they will be a top seed.

Ireland's poor performances in the UEFA Nations League have ensured that Martin O'Neill's charges will be third seeds.

They now run the risk of meeting the Germans whose presence as a second seed throws the cat amongst the pigeons.

The top two teams in each group qualify automatically with the play-off places determined by their ranking arising from UEFA Nations League results.

Ireland have a very strong chance of a play-off if they fail to secure a top two finish because they started the new competition in League B.

It's expected that a large number of sides in League A and League B will take up the automatic qualifying places, so that's why Ireland would be placed to benefit.

However, a return of just two points from 12 leaves them down the list and in danger of landing a tougher tie if they need that play-off.

Ireland will start the next Nations League series in League C where they will be at the same level as sides such as Kosovo, Belarus, and Macedonia.
