Derby defender Cyrus Christie on verge of Ireland call-up following talks with Martin O'Neill
Derby County defender Cyrus Christie is on the verge of a call-up to the Ireland squad after holding talks with Martin O’Neill.
The 22-year-old right back has made an impression with the Championship promotion chasers this term following his summer move from his hometown Coventry.
And O’Neill, a regular visitor to Derby to keep tabs on Jeff Hendrick and Richard Keogh, has spoken with the Irish qualified player about coming on board.
However, FAI officials have suggested it is unlikely that Christie will be drafted ahead of Saturday’s Aviva Stadium encounter with Gibraltar and Tuesday’s trip to Gelsenkirchen to take on Germany although the fact that he has not represented England at any level makes the issue of clearance less complicated.
Christie was linked with a move to the Premier League before putting pen to paper with Steve McClaren’s side in July.
