Diego Costa beat Harry Kane in a battle of the strikers as Chelsea snatched a 2-1 win over London rivals Tottenham.

Costa and Kane have both enjoyed a return to form of late, Kane after a seven-week absence through injury and Costa, following a disappointing campaign last season.

The pair have hit 15 goals between them in the Premier League already and here, Press Association Sport's Tom Allnutt takes a closer look at how they fared at Stamford Bridge.

Kane looked sharp and fit, hustling Chelsea's defenders into mistakes and occupying them with well-timed runs through the channels. Tottenham are twice the side when Kane is at full pelt and there were encouraging signs he is finally getting back to his best. As always, Costa was tenacious throughout and it was noticeable how, in potentially fractious moments, the forward showed restraint where previously he might have vented his frustration.

Kane ploughed a lone furrow up front for Spurs but he did well to bring the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen into play. It was his driving run forward in fact that won the free-kick which led to Eriksen's opener. Costa is less renowned for his build-up play but it was his cross that found Victor Moses free at the back post and the wing-back finished off to give Chelsea a valuable win.

Neither striker enjoyed the chances they would have liked here as both put in generous shifts for their team-mates. Costa bustled down the left side of the penalty area but fired wide in the first half while Kane had the ball in the net early on but the goal was, correctly, ruled out for offside.

Costa won the day for a superb team performance. He kept his cool when in the past he might have boiled over and was a constant provider for those around him. Kane lost this battle but certainly looks close to regaining top form. Both will be essential to their side's success this season.
