Hansen: Gerrard deserves to win the title
Alan Hansen, the last Liverpool captain to lift the lift the league title, says the current Reds skipper deserves to lead the current crop to domestic glory.
After yesterday’s dramatic victory over Manchester City, Liverpool are just four games away from their first league title since 1990 and Hansen believes that the midfielder is deserving of such an occasion for all he has given to the club.
“You could see at the end what the win over Manchester City on Saturday meant to him and he got it absolutely spot on with his comments after the game,” he wrote in his Daily Telegraph column.
“He has carried the club for so many years, through the highs and lows, and could easily have gone to Chelsea in 2005 but stayed loyal to go down as one of the legendary figures in Liverpool folklore.”
Hansen also believes that manager Brendan Rodgers deserves huge credit for positioning Gerrard in a deeper role in midfield, allowing him to flourish in his new surroundings.
“Liverpool are so potent on the counter-attack now, with so much explosive pace, that in all honesty it would be very difficult to accommodate Steven in the old, more advanced role, but this new position is perfect for him.”
“I remember watching him in a game against West Bromwich Albion last season and he was attempting to do the things he was doing 12 years ago. You were left wondering if he could still do it, but this season has been a revelation.”
The former Reds defender thinks that the club will maintain their position at the top of the table, though does expect a huge challenge from Chelsea when they arrive on Merseyside in less than two weeks.
