Guerrero fan apology holds little water with Hamburg
HAMBURG striker Paolo Guerrero must be feeling a little foolish right now. Instead of lining out for his club tomorrow against Bochum as they chase a Europa League place, Guerrero will be sitting at home watching it on television after a moment of madness got him banned for the rest of the season.
The Peruvian international was walking off the pitch to a chorus of jeers after Hamburg's 0-0 draw at home to 10-man Hannover last Sunday when he got involved in a confrontation with an irate fan. Instead of walking a few steps further towards the sanctuary of the tunnel, Guerrero lost the plot and hurled a plastic water bottle at the fan, hitting his head.
The player was ushered away while the fan was treated by medics before being released without serious injury.
Guerrero apologised the next day, saying: "I had a blackout... I overreacted. I am incredibly sorry."
Hamburg chairman Bernd Hoffmann said: "He is getting a fine the like of which there has never been in the club."
Guerrero is believed to have been hit with a fine of around €100,000.
However, the German football federation also banned him for five games, meaning his season is effectively over and he may have also worn a Hamburg shirt for the last time as his contract is up next month.
