SHAY GIVEN is on target to make Ireland's opening Euro 2012 qualifiers in September after initial indications that his shoulder operation was a success.

However, the Manchester City 'keeper faces a fight to retain the No 1 jersey at Eastlands next term after it was confirmed that Joe Hart will return to the club in pre-season after a successful loan spell with Birmingham.

Given is unlikely to be ready for the start of pre-season after undergoing surgery on the left shoulder he damaged in last Saturday's draw with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Yet the club are confident that the work on his shoulder and ligaments went according to plan, and the 34-year-old will now begin rehabilitation with a view to being ready for competitive action in August.

That's good news for Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni, who was worried that the setback would put Given's participation in the September clashes with Armenia and Andorra in jeopardy.
