Gers player in Irish squad

GLASGOW RANGERS have had a player called into the Republic of Ireland U-18 squad.

Cork-born goalkeeper Alan Smith was last night named in Sean McCaffrey's squad for a friendly tournament in the Czech Republic next week. Smith (18) joined the Scottish club from Crumlin United. Rangers players have never been involved in any Republic of Ireland squads previously.

It is believed that the Glasgow giants have only ever had four players born in this country on their books in the past. Alex Stevenson played for both the FAI and IFA 'Ireland' teams in the 1930s and Alex Craig, James Lowry McAuley and Reuben Evans also had spells at Ibrox.
