CELEBRITY fans have been humming the famous ‘Match of the Day’ theme tune as the iconic BBC soccer show turns 50.

The broadcaster is lining up a host of famous faces from both on and off the pitch to mark the occasion.

Barry Stoller, the composer of the music, explained its origins.

“We have to go back to the summer of 1970.

“It’s those last few notes. They represented gladiators, footballers in the arena.

“From that moment I knew the piece had to be played completely by trumpets

Famously cool Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho even has a soft spot for the tune.

“You listen to that song, the thing that comes immediately to you is Match of the day.

Former Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand also expressed his fondness for the music since childhood: “As soon as that came on you dropped what you were doing and sat in front of the TV.”
